Young Xhosa
girl - Quamta
Quamta, the supreme god of the Xhosa people of the Transkei in South-Africa
is worshipped at stone mounds , to which a stone is added by each worshipper.
Among the Xhosa, marriage is recognised as a legal form by abduction,
but, the bride price must be paid, although this may take a number of
years. The finalising of marriage takes place only when the price is paid,
a ritual in which the bride takes part, husband and children are not being
present. The ceremony is presided over by two of the elders, a man and
a woman who escort the girl and her maids through a superficially simple
ritual, where each move has a name and significance.
