ON CANVAS Atum, the primeval god, alone unaided by any feminine counterpart succeeded in fertilising himself and produced the first devine couple. Shu (air) and Tefnut (moisture). A second devine couple derived from the first, Geb, the earth god and Nut, the sky goddess. At this point Shu came between Geb and Nut, and raised the body of the sky goddess above that of the earth god. Finally, two other couples were born of the union of Geb and Nut; Osiris and Isis and Seth and Nephtys Nut was generally depicted as a woman with blue skin, and her body covered with stars, standing on all fours, leaning over her husband, representing the sky arched over the earth.

(The
little clay figure on the frame of painting is the ANKH sign, a sacred
symbol, which represents the essential life force and signifies the eternal
existence of the gods. It has the attributes of air and water. Many people
still wear it today for their secret power.)
