Rain Queen
The Lovedu are situated in the North-eastern Transvaal near the village
of the Devil's Kloof and bounded on the east by the Kruger National Park.
The main source of Odomaro's (Modjadi) authority came from the believe
in her power to make or with-hold rain, which is essential to the prosperity
of her people. She is praised as the transformer of the clouds. The forest
of the sacred Cycad Trees has a part in the Queen's rites. These Cycads
are living fossils and in the same form as their ancestors were 150 million
years ago. It is said that these ancestors lived side by side with the
Dinosaurs.
The Rain Queen of Lovedu was thousands of years old and renewed her youth
and beauty by walking the flames of eternal youth. But she fell in love
and lost her life when she told her lover the secret of the flames. The
reincarnation of the Queen goes on: A Modjadi has ruled since 1800.
